Early in the morning of January 19th, I received a text from Joanna that her labour had started. As it was only early labour I had decided to move on with my day and take my daughter to her swimming class. All day I was thinking about Joanna and how she was doing; time went by slowly. Let me just say that it is exciting to be on-call! 9pm rolled around, and I got a call, that it is time for me to go. I quickly gathered my stuff and headed out for my 30-minute drive. I’m sure it was the coldest night of the season! I arrived just after Joanna and at the same time as Chantal (Jo’s midwives).
We waited, filled up the birthing tub, I took photos, chatted, and waited a little more. By midnight, things were starting to pick up, and our lovely Momma headed to the pool. I was amazed how well she was doing; so calm and collected, riding through her contractions like a pro! A few pushes, and baby Hartley emerged shortly after 3am. I admit I was crying, it was so beautiful. He was such a lively and alert baby. The midwives did some measuring, checking, and cleaning up while I was diligently taking all the shots that are so important in this happy time. By 5am I was headed home to cuddle my own baby, and I was full of joy and excitement to be a part of the wonderful birth of Hartley. Welcome to the world, little man!
Hugs,
Helga
